On January 26, 2006 RC Sproul Jr (son of the rather infamous Reformed theologian) and his entire Session, were defrocked by the Westminster Presbytery of the RPCGA. This is now very big news in the Presbyterian world, and has caught the attention of others, as well (see http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=12128 )
This is a textbook case of how church members can take on ecclesiastical tyrants using ecclesiastical law. That works well for Presbyterians, since they're big on BCO's, church constitutions, checks and balances, and accountability. However, it may not work out so well for non-denoms, charismatics, Baptists, and various other autonomists who disdain such "formalities."
Peter Kershaw was responsible for putting the case together. You can find many of the case documents at: http://hushmoney.org/RC_Sproul_Jr-defrocking-docs.htm and the case background at: http://hushmoney.org/R.C._Sproul_Jr._disclaimer.htm |
