Counsel from Scripture

Richard Anthony

Romans 12 contains the duty for those in Christ. Galatians 5:22-23 contains the character traits of a believer in Christ.

  • Always be striving to find out what best pleases the Lord (Ephesians 5:10).
  • We should lend without expecting anything in return (Luke 6:34-35).
  • Don't be ashamed to preach God to kings (Psalm 119:46).
  • Do not hold hard feelings towards God or man (Acts 24:16, 1 Peter 4:8).
  • Don't regard our temporal interests, but eternal interests (Matthew 6:19, John 6:27).
  • Do not pursue your own interests, but God's (Matthew 16:25-26, Mark 8:35-36, Luke 9:24-25).
  • It's importance to have at least a partner in the ministry, no loners (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Matthew 11:2; 18:20; 21:1, Mark 6:7; 11:1; 14:13, Luke 7:19; 10:1; 19:29, John 1:35, 37, Acts 9:38).
  • Bondservants of Christ should actually have others speak bad of them, and not everyone speaking good (Luke 6:26).
  • The best way to expose and oppose a lie is by knowing the Truth (John 8:32).
  • Paul became as the people he preached to in order to gain them. (1 Corinthians 9:19-22).
  • He that believes will not act hastily (Isaiah 28:16).
  • We are not to compare themselves to others (2 Corinthians 10:12).
  • Don't blame God for your problems. When we plant the seed of trouble, we will reap the same (Galatians 6:7). It is very important to give God the glory, and not ourselves (Acts 12:22-23).
  • We are to be content with he things we have, with our wages, etc. (Luke 3:14, Hebrews 13:5, Philippians 4:11).

  • Passages to Ponder

Matthew 7:7-8, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

1 Timothy 6:20, "...keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: "

2 John 1:9-11, "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."

Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."

Isaiah 33:15-16, "He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; He shall dwell on high:"

Romans 13:13-14, "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."

2 Peter 1:5-8, "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."
