A few groups claim that God has a sacred name and only their version of the sacred name is acceptable for worship. I was once convinced by the sacred name theological rhetoric; but since then I've actually done some study of texts, language, and history, and I have found problems with "sacred-nameology." Here are some problems I've found in sacred nameology.

Some of the sacred names touted are: JEHOVAH, YAHVAH, and YAHWEH.

Let's look at what these names mean in ancient Hebrew.

-------------------------------------------------
JE, YE, IAH, JA == contracted form of EHYEH, the name of God that God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14. This contraction sometimes is used as a suffix to form names, but rarely as a prefix. Yet sacred nameology contends without validity that IAH or JA is a prefix on various flavors of the sacred name. If this were true we would have JAHELI instead of ELIJAH or JAHALLELU instead of HALLELUJAH. In other words, nonsense becomes doctrine in sacred nameology. The only exception I can find in my study is YESHA, a name for Jesus, which is a contraction of EHYEH and YAHSHA and literally means "liberty, freedom." This is where we get the concept of a savior, or one who sets men free from oppression. And in Greek, YESHA becomes JESHAS or JESHUS.

The name, JESUS, literally means FREEDOM!

"I am the way, the truth, and the life..."
"you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free!"
-------------------------------------------------
JEHOVAH == je + hovah
Strongs: H1943
#1492;#1493;#1492;
ho#770;va#770;h
ho-vaw'
Another form for H1942; ruin: - mischief.
literal meaning of JEHOVAH: "the destruction of EHYEH."
or if taken with root meaning, havah, "the coveting or desire to be EHYEH."
-------------------------------------------------
YA == ancient moon god or perverted form of JE
-------------------------------------------------
YAHVAH == ya + ahvah
Strongs: H5753
#1506;#1493;#1492;
#8219;a#770;va#770;h
aw-vaw'
A primitive root; to crook, literally or figuratively: - do amiss, bow down, make crooked, commit iniquity, pervert, (do) perverse (-ly), trouble, X turn, do wickedly, do wrong.
literal meaning of YAHVAH: "perverse moon god, or perversion of JE"
-------------------------------------------------
YAHVEH (also, YAHWEH) == JE + AHVEH
Strongs: H5773
#1506;#1493;#1506;#1492;
#8219;av#8219;eh
av-eh'
From H5753; perversity: - X perverse.
literal meaning of YAHVEH or YAHWEH: "perverse JE, perverse moon god."
-------------------------------------------------
In the Septuagint circa 280 BC we do find the name JESOUS as a name for the Almighty.
The names YAHWEH, YASHUA, YEHOWUSHUA, JEHOVAH are found nowhere in the ancient texts. They are invented guesses, at best, perversions of the truth at a modicum. Yet some demand and proclaim that these sacred names are the names of God and should be used. And some falsely state that JESUS is an invented name for the Messiah. Yet, in theGreek Septuagint circa 280 BC we do find the name JESUS (IEOUSUS) as a name for the Almighty.

logical Conclusion: In the entire Bible there is only one place where the Almighty speaks his name to a mortal as a name and not just a title. That is in Exodus 3:14. The name God reveals to Moses is EHYEH, a form of HAVAH(to be) but rendered as a name instead of a verb. Jesus repeated this in the lingua franca of his day by calling himself, I AM. Not Yahweh, not Jehovah, but EHYEH. Sacred name religionism is not supported by the Bible or the actual Hebrew meaning of the proposed sacred names.

If there were truth to the idea that one "must use the sacred name" in worship, then going to the original biblical texts we would find only two candidates:

EHYEH and JESUS

But before either of these two names were revealed to Israel, all the prophets and patriarchs knew the Almighty only by his titles:

EL SHADDAI, ADONAI.

Exo 6:3 "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name EHYEH was I not known to them."

(note: translators and scribes substituted JEHOVAH for EHYEH in the above passage. This is proven in Exodus 3:14.)

There is no evidence to indicate that before Moses that any prophets knew God as YAHWEH or JEHOVAH. The evidence is to the contrary.

Neither did Moses know the Father by any false or imagined names. He knew him as EHYEH.

People want to do right (or at least *think* they are doing right) and seek to call God by a special name as if the spoken name had magical power. What they fail to realize is that in the Bible, all the prophets before Moses did not even know the Almighty's name. They only knew him by two titles, and it was the faith in Him, not the spoken words, that had power to save. And the name JESUS literally means, "freedom." What a coincidence!

Sacred Namology is the very sorcery the Kabbalists and Talmudists had in mind when they replaced EHYEH with YAHWEH, YHWH, and JEHOVAH.
