Laws concerning Duty to Others

Richard Anthony

If you see a brother's animal straying, go over and help catch the animal and return it to him. If your brother is not home, bring it to your home until he comes home. Likewise, do this with all lost things of your brother's (Deuteronomy 22:1-4). If you're walking down the road and an animal comes along that belongs to your neighbor, you're not to say, “Oh, I'm in a hurry. I haven't got time. He'll find him sooner or later. I'm not even going to let him know I saw him,” and just keep on going your way. You are responsible for trying to help protect your neighbor's belongings.

We are to do likewise with our enemy (Exodus 23:4-5).

A woman is not to dress like a man and a man is not to dress like a woman (Deuteronomy 22:5).

The days of man upon the earth are dependant upon his attention to the animals, and to not destroying species, and to conserving our natural resources (Deuteronomy 22:6-7).

Guard against hazards in the home, such as building a guard-rail around a high patio, stairway, or, if it's used as living space, a flat roof (Deuteronomy 22:8).

If our brother is poor, and he is distressed and in want, we are to open our hand wide to him, and lend him as much as he wants according to his need, and don't grudge in your heart as you give to him (Deuteronomy 15:7-11).

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink (Proverbs 25:21).

Loans to brothers must be without interest, but loans to strangers may be with interest (Exodus 22:5, Deuteronomy 23:20).

If your neighbor owes a debt, any debt whatsoever, do not go into his house to take his pledge, stand without and the man who is in thy debt shall bring the pledge out to thee. If the man be poor, do not sleep with his pledge, but restore his pledge at sunset (Deuteronomy 24:10-13).

We are not to withhold wages of a workman, but pay him the same day, the sun shall not go down upon it (Leviticus 19:13, Deuteronomy 24:14-15, Matthew 20:8-9).

We are permitted to eat the produce from out neighbor's vineyard or field sufficient to satisfy our desire, as long as we gather them with our hands and not use a tool, and as long as we do not put them into a container (Deuteronomy 23:24-25).

If a man and an unmarried woman have sex together, it is their duty to marry each other (Exodus 22:16-17, Deuteronomy 22:28).

When in the presence of an elderly man or woman, we are to honour them (Leviticus 19:32).
